Futures wheel
The futures wheel is a visual tool for exploring the ripple effects of change so you can think beyond first reactions and see wider implications. You place a specific trend, decision, or event in the center (for example, “AI in our industry” or “new regulation”), then map its first-order impacts around it, followed by second- and third-order impacts in outer rings. This creates a structured “map” of possible consequences, both intended and unintended, instead of guessing in the dark.
In my work, I use the futures wheel to help clients slow down their thinking, surface hidden risks and opportunities, and make more informed strategic choices. By visually tracing how one change can cascade through people, processes, markets, and systems, it helps us to spot leverage points, design better responses, and prepare for futures that might otherwise catch people by surprise.
